Google now has a solar system on it's roof tops and carports that will pay for itself in as little as 7.5 years. With the price of energy in the stratosphere, it makes economical sense to invest in a solar system that can supply a large chuck of the power required to run a commercial business or a residential home. The energy savings will immediately be felt in a reduction from the largest tier based electric costs. By designing a system that produces the brunt of the electricity requirements, a residential homeowner or commercial business can reduce their dependence on the electrical grid.

Most new solar systems are designed with the capabilities of feeding directly into the electrical power grid when the sun is out, and the panels are producing electricity. Where as in the evening, the consumer or business draws off the grid, when demand is typically low. New meters are installed that will operate in both directions. When the solar system is generating more power than is being used at the immediate location at that time, the meter will in fact run backwards. Alternatively, when using more electricity than is being supplied by the photovoltaic solar systems, the meter will run in the forward direction.

Some businesses and homeowners have gone and installed more solar arrays above and beyond what makes the most economical sense. This, while helping to eliminate the dependence on the power grid, will substantially extend the payback period.

What some might think is just a wild technology and an unbelievable story, is in fact based on some interesting research activities going on up in Alaska and other places.

Background Information

Remember the name Nicola Tesla? If you paid attention in some of those physics classes when the teacher was talking about electrical properties you might of heard of this guy.

(b. July 9/10, 1856, Smiljan, Croatia--d. Jan. 7, 1943, New York City), Serbian-American inventor and researcher who discovered the rotating magnetic field, the basis of most alternating-current machinery. He emigrated to the United States in 1884 and sold the patent rights to his system of alternating-current dynamos, transformers, and motors to George Westinghouse the following year. In 1891 he invented the Tesla coil, an induction coil widely used in radio technology.

So Nikola Tesla was the father of AC Alternating Current along with a number of other inventions. Some of the concepts such as, transmission and radiation of radio frequency energy, high-voltage high-frequency radio propagation, and X-ray microwave technology that Tesla and another scientist by the name of Guglielmo Marconi, are what the HARRP Project is based on.

Radio waves were known as 'Hertzian Waves' when Marconi began experimenting in 1894. A few years earlier Heinrich Hertz had produced and detected the waves across his laboratory. Marconi's achievement was to produce and detect the waves over long distances, laying the foundations for what today we know as radio.

Currently there is research going on with the HAARP Project from the University of Alaska as well as DARPA. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is the central research and development organization for the Department of Defense (DoD). It manages and directs selected basic and applied research and development projects for DoD, and pursues research and technology where risk and payoff are both very high and where success may provide dramatic advances for traditional military roles and missions.

DARPA established an MOA, Memorandum Of Agreement, with the Air Force for this program in August 2002. The HAARP technology is planned for transition to the Air Force and Navy in FY 2006.

So What Does The HAARP Project Do?

For starters, it is a massive antenna farm in which high power radio waves are beamed up into the ionsphere. Major amounts of power are used to generate directional frequency waves into the ionsphere.

Overview

The High Frequency Active Auroral Research Project (HAARP) will develop new experimental research capabilities and will conduct research programs to exploit emerging ionosphere and radio science technologies related to advanced defense applications.

The FY 1990 Appropriation Act provided funds for the creation of HAARP, jointly managed by the Air Force Research Laboratory and the Office of Naval Research to exploit emerging ionosphere and high power radio technology for new military systems applications.

Key to the current effort is the expansion of the experimental research facility that includes a 3.6 MW high-frequency transmitter and a variety of diagnostic instruments, to conduct investigations to characterize the physical processes that can be initiated and controlled in the ionosphere and space, via interactions with high power radio waves.

Among these are:

(1) the generation of extremely low frequency/very low frequency radio waves for submarine and other subsurface communication, and the reduction of charged particle populations in the radiation belts to ensure safe spacecraft systems operations;

(2) the control of electron density gradients and the refractive properties in selected regions of the ionosphere to create radio wave propagation channels; and

(3) the generation of optical and infrared emissions in space to calibrate space sensors.

To date, the facility has been developed to include a suite of optical and radio diagnostics and an advanced, modern, high frequency transmitting array that has a radiated power of 960 kW, about one-third of the 3.6MW called for in the original concept and plan. The current high frequency transmitting array has proven to be extremely reliable and flexible, and has shown the feasibility of the overall concept. However, results to date indicate that advanced applications-related research activities and new military system concept demonstrations envisioned under the program require that the high frequency transmitting capability at the site be increased from the present 960 kW level to the originally planned 3.6 MW level.

A recent study completed by an Air Force/Navy Panel also points to additional high-value functions that can potentially be accomplished with the a 3.6 MW capability, in particular, the exploration and refinement of scientific principles that could lead to the development and deployment of a system to provide protection for space-based assets from emergent asymmetric threats. DARPA established an MOA with the Air Force for this program in August 2002. The HAARP technology is planned for transition to the Air Force and Navy in FY 2006.

Program Plans

Complete the HAARP high frequency transmitting array at the HAARP Research Station, Gakona, AK.

Prepare the existing HAARP facility in preparation for ionspheric testing.

Conduct advanced ionosphere and radio science research and analysis of applications including space-based asset protection and phenomena related to its implementation.

In short, the government plans for HAARP are for research and testing out various Star Wars technologies along with the various related phenomenas associated with this techology.

That is quite an open-ended plan. Were it goes from here is anybody's guess.

Ever see the insides of a cell phone and wonder how it is assembled? How about the small metal battery compartments inside hi-tech toys. What about the miniature memory modules that go in digital cameras. Then there are the assembly of keyboards, laptop computers, cordless phones, SIMM cards, PCMCIA card modules, automotive parts, and even the remote controls are assembled with what is known as Heat Staking.

The Heat Staking Process

When a manufacture wants to join metal-to-metal or plastics-to-metal via small plastic posts that protrude from the plastic housing a heat staking machine is used to apply controlled heat, time, and pressure through a heat staking head. Typically the head is heated up to a controlled temperature. Once heated to the proper temperature depending on the types of metals and plastics being staked, the head makes contact with the protruding plastic posts and are formed into various types of heat staked posts. Post Types Include: FLAT PROFILE, DOME, HOLLOW, CROSS-SHAPED, and ROSETTE POSTS

When an entire plastic side needs to be formed into a plastic lip to hold a metal device, glass lens, or another plastic assembly this is referred to as side swaging.

Heat staking is found in: aerospace, industrial, medical, dental, automotive, semiconductor, electrical, appliance, telecommunications, fixtures, electronics, house-wares, cellular, communications, memory module units, sporting equipment, PCB connector, PDAs, LCD connectors, computers, and more. Just about every type of manufacturing industry uses some form of heat staking to assemble their products.

Ultrasonics is also another form of assembly, but due to the new tight tolerance size constraints of the miniature products and the larger size head design requirements for ultrasonics to function properly, and typically a slower throughput with ultrasonic assembly equipment, more manufactures are heading to the Heat Staking Machines route for their mass production parts and products assemblies. Heat staking heads can be designed to incorporate very small multi-point contacts to speed up the mass production assembly process.

The same machines used for staking can also be used for a heatsealing process. For example when lcd display units need to be applied to a circuit board assembly a special conductive heat activated glue-like adhesive is activated with a heat press. The heat staking process is known for its outstanding repeatability in the mass production environment. Heat staked joints in the miniature world of plastics assembly can withstand the rigors of vibration of heavy daily use of the assembled products. The process is also known for the mega machines that are involved in the large format automotive sector. MY, how have we progressed since the horse and buggy days.

In the early days of self propelled vehicles they ran on steam. Now we have a whole new generation of self propelled vehicles using battery technology and super efficient high powered motors. A number of these electric scooter vehicles are starting to be used at large warehouses and even at car racing events for pit crews to use from one end of Pit alley to the other.

Even Detroit Automakers are trying to play catch-up to the Japanese Automakers by getting into the picture of designing hybrid cars based on battery technology. Though the leader appears to be Honda in the race for bringing top fuel efficient engines in hybrid cars to the market place.

Last week, however, Honda “leaked to the Wall Street Journal its progress on developing a new type of more efficient, cleaner-burning engine: a four-cylinder gasoline engine that uses Homogeneous Charged Compression Ignition. Read full hybrid cars story

Currently the Honda Insight holds the top mileage for hybrids.

The new technology being talked about is the hydrogen fuel cell engine. The one major hang-up with hydrogen fuel cells is the fact that the fuel is more expensive to produce and store than the traditional hydrocarbons.

Maybe the next generation of vehicles will run on something that has not even been harnessed yet. I guess we will have to wait and see.

I'll never forget the first time I used a browser for web navigation. It was called Mosaic and was originally loaded on my Mac PowerPC 6100 computer. Wow have Internet times changed!

Out of that came the Netscape Mozilla Browser and Internet Explorer, with others following. Now comes a brand new start-up with the attempt to turn the world upside down as far as web browsing is concerned.

Meet The Flock

Flock is a creative new browser that is doing things in a different and unique way. In fact their statement on their about page sums it up:

Who are you people, anyway?

Well, we're pretty much a bunch of regular folks trying to shake things up.

To describe the Flock browser is difficult to do. It has interesting features that remind me a little of the Apple Safari and Firefox Mozilla Browser all rolled into one with additional features for Blogging. In fact, one area developers are targeting is Bloggers in general.

One of the features of this browser is the built-in control panel for uploading, editing, and managing the content on any blog. Additional features allow you to share bookmarks with others online. Take a look at what you can do.

Business Week had an article on this start-up company.

To really understand what you can do with this Internet Browser requires hands-on experience. Currently Flock has a download version for experimentation by developers and individuals. It still is in a development state but anyone can download it and try it out. They certainly are looking for quality feedback.

Additionally, when you download the Flock Browser you get a free WordPress Blogging account. I wanted to experiement with another blogging software and thought I would try both the software and the browser at the same time.

Big Brother Listening To Your Keyboard?

Shush, is your keyboard speaking?

Not in the literal sense, although they probably have talking keyboards, but there is a new program, developed by a computer scientist student at UC Berkeley, that can listen to the keyboard strokes and decipher with over 90% accuracy what was typed.

The audio recording is done with a simple recording device placed near the subject. Then the audio is fed through a program algorithm which processes and deciphers the keystrokes.

Passwords and other personal and identifiable information can be ascertained through this type of processing.

While the computer scientist student set out to demonstrate the security holes in using keyboards, I would imagine there are applications that could come out of this technology that would be helpful to the world. At present though, I find it difficult to come up with any ideas that would make this type of program useful in other ways. Of course, the development of other spy technology stuff has helped in various fields of business. For example, the super powerful spy satellites that can read the information on a dollar bill from thousands of miles in space has helped in the field of mapping technologies, analysis of tectonic plate movements, weather analysis, and even GPS tracking.

As with any new technology, the potential is always present to use it for evil. Hopefully , something good will result from the keyboards.

The time is coming when the computer operating system at home or the office will need to be nothing more than a connection to the Internet. Web Applications and Operating Systems will reside online and even your files will be able to be stored in a secure online area.

Today, businesses utilize internal web applications that reside on a Intranet server to do all types of CRM, order processing, billing, and even word processing. These types of processes are also being done through the Internet with Realtors for example using MLS search services set up through their websites or CRM activities with advanced software for sending out updates to registered individuals.

Google has shown that storing your emails online can be a great benefit for anyone using the service. Storage prices continue to plummet, making it more and more cost effective to store information online. The next step is to have backup storage for your files online. Taking this a step further, by skipping the backup storage solution, with actually keeping your files in a secure area that you can get to from any computer in the world would be a great leapfrog solution.

Word processing is probably one of the most used applications in the world. MS Word leads the charge with powerful features for layout and design for the average person. In fact, I would venture to say that most individuals do not use one tenth of the features that this program provides. The natural progression or evolution of the Internet will be able to have a virtual operating system. In fact this is already taking place. If you take a look at the way things are going now, we have online banking, automatic bill pay, credit card processing, and even great software which allows me to publish on the Internet.

I recently read that Microsoft is concerned about the strides that Google is making into territory that once was regarded as MS only. Several writers have wondered out loud if Google has an operating system in the offering. Maybe the operating system is already there in the form of the virtual Internet world that we all live in. It would be a piece of cake for someone to offer a great word processing program online.

Imagine what it would be like to compose a research article on super conductors or hydrogen fuel cells and every time the article is saved, automatic searches are configured based on the keywords in the article. Simply hit the link and you are taken to the keyword searches. This would have the advantage of providing relevant information, and with algorithms built around spurring the mind on into new territories would make better writers of us all. On the right side of the article could be related advertisements. Composing a business article to be printed and postal mailed or attached to an email would be as simple as composing and attaching it to an email or printing it out on your local or networked printer and slipped into the mailbox.

What can new technology and software do for you?

Well, apparently we can do a lot of things with technology today. In fact, it continually amazes me daily, with new techno software programs that come out into the market place, and in some cases are absolutely free.

This evening I was just surfing around on the web when I landed on my blog sign-in page. I noticed that Google has come out with a tool to be able to compose, edit, and post a blog directly from Microsoft Word.

When the free program is loaded and installed on your computer, a tool bar appears at the top of MS Word which provides a means: to open a post, save a draft, or publish the article.

This could be very useful for both editing and composing posts. For example, while the online publishing control panel is excellent there are features that are built into MS Word that really makes it helpful for instant spelling checks and sentence structure.

Additionally, with the fact that the page in Word is a full size makes it easier to compose your thoughts. I am sure there are other benefits to using a full size word processor that I will discover as time goes on. For now though, this is the first posting that I have done with the Google Toolbar for Microsoft Word. This is Cool. Note: This version does not support graphics. If you are going to edit an older post with pictures, the pictures will be lost when reposted.

Radio Frequency Identifying RFID

More and more companies are investing into RFID technology to provide everything from inventory control systems to tracking cars and people.

WalMart recently told their suppliers that an rfid system needed to be incorporated for supply chain tracking, into cases and pallets for tracking of products into and out of warehouses, and from the suppliers.

There are basically two types of systems in use today. One is a passive rfid system in which a micro chip is implanted in an object and when that object is passed over or near a transmitter/receiver a signal is reflected back from the rfid to the receiver. By assigning identifiable numbers and other data to each chip, tracking can be accomplished in real-time via the Internet or internal servers. The other system is an active system where the chip transmits and some can even store information changes. Ranges with passive can be several feet vs. active rfid can be hundreds of feet or more by incorporating cellular and satellite technology and the world wide web.

This technology can be used in a diverse number of ways and it certainly brings into issue the legal and ethical implications from privacy and controlling aspects of Big Brother getting involved in the mix. People tracking is already going on at the criminal level but what about when they implant a chip in your car. As you drive from point A to point B there could be sensors implanted in the roadways and if you got there too fast, the system would automatically know you were speeding and cite you a ticket. Not to mention that a history could be built to let someone spy on you and know where you have been anytime that vehicle is used. This type of system might sound good for tracking your teenager and making sure they are not using the vehicle for inappropriate activities but what about your sales activities?

When a person really understands how small some of these devices are it gives a whole different perspective to the meaning of the word implants. Some of these devices are the size of a grain of rice or smaller. There is even a company that makes a medical rfid chip that is implanted under the skin of an individual which can keep track of the medical history for that patent. This technology is a take-off of searching for and tracking pets when they might get lost.

Yes, it really is amazing what RFID technology can do for us today. But in the whole mix of things it can also be used both for good and bad. So consider carefully for what you ask for, because you just might get it. Imagine the possibilities.

Are we ready for M2M "Machine to Machine"?

As the world becomes more and more computer automated there is the need for remotely gathering telemetry data or remotely accessing equipment, programs, and machines.

M2M represents Man-to-machine or Machine-to-machine and is gathering more steam as the new buzzword for the present and the future.

This type of process is already going on extensively in various industries. The trucking industry is a prime target for tracking devices installed in the trucks. As they move across the country information is automatically sent to a server for tracking, routing, and scheduling purposes.

Telemetry gathering was done with our first ventures into outer-space. With cell phone bands, wireless Internet, and relatively inexpensive satellite communications M2M is taking on a whole new meaning.

M2M can significantly simplify general tasks such as having a meter reader person replaced with an automatic transmission type device that could send a signal over the power grid to a central data collection point.

While this represents major breakthroughs in technology it does bring up ethical and business issues related to Man being replaced by Machines. We even have the next stage going on where machines are building machines. At what point does man sit back and let the machines do all the work for him? While the Terminator series of movies was fashioned out of science fiction theme of man versus machines, are we approaching a point where we may have "T3 The Rise of the Machines?"

ups Blocks Data Losses

When it comes to computers there are a number of things one can do to prevent bugs and viruses from infecting your system but an important item not to overlook is securing a computer from power fluctuations or power blackouts.

Operating systems tend to get scrambled if not properly shut down and data loss can occur during an improper shut down. Not only can operating systems get scrambled but so can the programs themselves. Believe me, I am talking from experience.

A way of combating this is to use a device called a ups or "uninterruptible power supply"

How the ups works is the computer and peripherals get plugged into a device that has a battery built into it. When there is a power outage or sag in the voltage the battery kicks in automatically allowing the computer to continue on running. After a preset time it can go into an automatic shutdown mode or run for a time until a manual shut down is performed thus preserving the integrity of the system.

Some of these devices can even give you a remote page or email automatically sent to a preset mail box upon various different events.

I am using a unit from Tripp Lite.

Some of the factors that should be considered when sizing these units is the VA ratings. The higher the number the longer it will maintain power during an outage. Consider also if you would like remote monitoring and reports generated. They provide a free software that actually will function with other competitors units.

Although these units have a battery that will eventually need to be replaced it is well worth the insurance to have to replace the battery instead of losing customer files or your computer system.

Backup Recovery

I now have a full image backup copy of my PC hard drive.

I have been researching full disk imaging software for awhile now and finally settled on one.

Anyone that has ever tried to do a full image backup of their hard drive with the operating system and all associated files knows how difficult that can be. The Windows system for backup is not the best. If you only want to copy the files without the operating system it will work OK with a hard disk but will not function with other media forms. If it is your desire to be able to make a complete "C drive" disk image while the computer is running from the "C drive" then special software will be required.

One of the concerns that I have had is my internal hard-drive is quite old, with a lot of customer files, programs, and special applications that would be a real pain to rebuild from scratch. The software I selected has a number of features to completely clone a drive image, backup completely, or incremental backups.

The cool thing about this one was the program was very intuitive to operate from the get-go and then was very easy to verify that it created another image on a large extra internal drive in my PC. It even gave it a new letter "G" as a new partition and mounted hard disk with a password protection so no one would alter the data. It also created a bootable disk on a CD-R. This would be used in the event of a catastrophic failure or if a virus infected the system and a recovery was necessary. Will also work with CD-RW, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, Iomega Zip or Iomega Jaz media, and even to a network disk, USB, SCSI, or FireWire drives. Other features include: selectable data compression, copy all operating system files, can function in the background, schedule full or incremental backups, and the ability to restore or extract selected files.

OK, now I have peace of mind. Next step is to get another large internal hard disk and clone the current drive, swapping out the old and put in the new.

Wow! What a change is in store for us in the near future.

I always say that time seems to be moving faster but technology change is moving faster than the speed of light.

They say that technology doubles every eighteen months - OLD FACT.
Turn the search engine page. New search fact, it is impossible to keep up.

Overnight it seems like we have gone from computers that were super expensive to where now anyone can afford one. Prices on hardware components have provided a interesting situation. It seems as though every time an engineer thinks we have reached the limits of making the electronics smaller, faster, or more powerful, is blown out the door by the next new round of technology improvements.

With components such as memory and hard drives plus new super drives the information that can be stored will reach beyond what we can imagine. I remember when I thought 20 megabytes was a lot of memory. Now gigabytes and terabytes for hard drives are common place.

"Apollo, we have lift off!" The Petabyte disk drives. This size equals one million times a gigabyte or 10¹⁵ or 1,000,000,000,000,000 bytes. Those numbers are so large in fact that they are hard to comprehend exactly how large that is. Some naysayers have said this is a long way off, well you better look again.

So how is this going to help you?

First off, take a look at Google. They have blasted off on their email service that is out of this world. I have been using it for about two months now and I do not know what I would do with out it. I never ever, never ever, have to throw any emails away. I can always get to any email anywhere in the world.

Their anniversary gift to the world is to expand the storage capabilities beyond what anyone can imagine. Some of you know what P2P means but not everyone knows the tremendous online business applications for this web app.

First off take a look at the meaning. P2P stands for peer-to-peer. The most well know of these are involved in the online file sharing of music. In laymans terms it involves the ability of one computer sharing or transferring of information from one to the other. Transferring of information can be over the Internet or within, on an "Intranet" (internal server). It can involve any number of computers or login to a central server where a database of info is stored. In the true sense of peer-to-peer no one computer is the host client or server. Peer-to-peer allows all computers to operate as both.

A simple form of peer-to-peer that is used by the "Personal Data Assistant" group is when you perform a sync operation. Syncing a PDA to a computer involves the transfer of info from one to the other. In this example the computer or the PDA is updated and synced with the same info.

Other technology applications for this would involve online storage of information, backups of your computer system online, or the sharing of important files with a business partner or friend without having to email it to them. Peer-to-peer networks can be set up in a secure environment where only the person with an identification password and authorization would have access to the files.

Imagine, just being able to place a file in a folder on your desktop and have it show up on your associates computer on the other end without having to wait. Or, being able to have a backup that is updated immediately with no effort on the users part. Imagine how easy this would make it for doing work any place any time. Well, that is a reality today.

What Is Podcasting?

In my book, technology is the mother of invention and it sure is inventing new words to go along with the products created.

One of those invented words is podcasting.
Podcasting and Podcasts are from Apple iPod and broadcasting words. The iPod is a small device that can fit in your shirt pocket and stores MP3 songs or audio files. These files can be played back any place any time. Podcasting continues to evolve from a form of free speech to businesses using podcasts for marketing strategies. There are even Net directories with broadcasts of everything from sports information, computers, science, technology, and more.

You do not need to have an iPod device in order to use this. All that is needed is a computer and an Internet connection. There are free program readers that will allow you to subscribe to any broadcast online. When a subscribed to show is broadcasted the program can be set up to notify you and download the MP3 file to your computer. To sample any of these files simply do a search for podcasts or podcasting and listen to the files before your subscribe.

Much the same way blogs have changed the face of the Internet the podcasts could do the same. Anyone can set one up. All that is required is a computer and a microphone.

Hooked on Internet Speed

Once you get high speed hook-up there is no turning back!

If you have never tried cable or DSL (digital subscriber line) you have no idea what you are missing. Maybe that is good!

I have been using a digital cable high speed connection for years now and I do not know what I would do without it. Extensive time is spent online, researching projects, building and maintaining websites, uploading pictures and multimedia files to websites, downloading important documents from customers, FTP uploads and downloads, and downloading software updates.

With the number of software updates that occur weekly it would take forever on a dialup connection to download the patches.

Sometimes I am reminded of how long things took before when a website takes a long time to load or when a website goes down and the feeling of frustration that sets in when trying to access it.

Speed seems to be increasing. I just heard that a cable high speed ISP is up around 4 megabits per second. These speeds were unheard of just five or ten years ago for the average consumer.

With speed increases comes advanced online applications, games, news delivery, and entertainment apps.

People are spending more time on the Internet for all forms of information. Information delivery systems such as RSS and Atom feeds for blogs and websites are being used by the average person. High speed Internet applications are involved with cell phones and PDA technology for messaging, emails, and photos. Whole cities are being setup for wireless high-speed access for not only the police and fire departments but for the citizens themselves. WiFi Hot Spots are at various Starbucks and even McDonalds has wireless at some of their locations. Cameras are linked into the Internet system at intersections and highway overpasses to monitor red light violations and traffic flow.

Yes, it is truly amazing at the speed at which the Internet has affected are lives.

I Must Be Dreaming

Wow, What A Screen Saver!

I feel like I am in control central. Here I sit with my large screen Mac in the middle of my desk with two other monitors, one on the right and one on the left.

While working on the other PC, I was just finishing up a project when this beautiful hidden island and beach setting floated onto the Mac screen. The Apple has built in screen savers that are simply beautiful. The way they handle the graphics just captures the beauty of the pictures in such away to create the sense that a person is there.

I am sure there are other screen savers to download but what they give you is sufficient enough for me.

As I dive in more to the OS X Software I am discovering new things everyday. I have been trying out different browsers with the Mac. Apple supplies a browser called Safari. Safari is very similar to the Mozilla-Firefox browser. They have the abilities to have tabbed browsing. Tabbed browsing provides a means to open multiple tabs with-in the same window. This makes it easy to go back and forth between many websites when comparing or shopping online. Just installed the newly released browser, Camino by Mozilla, for the Apple OS X system.

Another day tomorrow. I need to go back and dream a little more.

What a Machine!

I took the plunge today. The iMac G5.

For weeks if not months I have been visiting a couple of different Apple stores in California, in the San Francisco Bay Area, looking at all the new toys. I was in need of another computer and fell in love with the new Apples.

I started out many moons ago on the old "SE". The "SE" machine had a whopping 20 meg. hard drive and a grayscale display . Then I graduated to the Power PC6100. Wow I had color! Then many years rolled by in "computer years" and customers were getting all these new Windows machines. I thought it would probably be a good idea for me to learn about these. So I did my investigative market research and found a PC at one of the malls. All of a sudden it seemed as though the whole world was getting on the bandwagon.

As timed rolled on, family members wanted computers. I was not about to pay what I felt was a huge markup on the computers at the various outlets so I dove into learning about the insides and built one. Then I needed a Linux system and built another PC. A short while later it was time for another family member to have one and pulling the same rabbit out of the hat I went down to the local Fry's and looked at all the motherboards and picked what I felt would be the best investment. In addition I picked up a hard drive, memory, CD, DVD player, and a monitor. This one had a little hitch though. The motherboard would not boot. No problem though, just a little time and patience. Took the board back and got another. This time it booted up like a champ.

Now I am coming round circle. I had really loved the Mac when I first had them but because of time moving on I really lost touch with the machine I loved.

A friend had recently purchased a PowerBook and had been a fan of Apple for as long as Apple has been around. He is an older gentleman that really took to the Mac. As I had been comparing the differences between the PowerBook vs the PC, I was realizing what a wonderful difference exisited between the two. I discovered there was a whole other world that I was missing.

So, I took the leap. When I went into the store I had intended to purchase the Mini, which is really a neat little machine but I needed more power and most importantly I needed a larger display with more real estate desktop space. I could have purchase the Mac mini with a large external display but by the time I would have added the external display, I could get the iMac G5 with a 20 inch wide screen display that is simply gorgeous. I picked up the high end model with Bluetooth wireless keyboard and mouse, 512 meg. of memory, 160 GB hard drive, and the Slot-load SuperDrive. With just a power plug and hooking up a network cable from my router I was in fat city.

When I turned it on it went through its boot up process and Wow! Once again I found the machine I love.

Technology is changing faster than anyone can stay up with it.

I remember just like it was yesterday when the first hand held calculators came out into the market place. They were big and bulky with big red LEDs and the batteries would only last for a short time. They only had a rudimentary amount of functions: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

The first one I ever saw was when my sister, a teacher, bought one for what I think was a couple of hundred dollars. I recall the family all getting excited about this technology and wondering where it would lead. We all wanted to try it out. Then with in another year or so the next wave of new and improved calculators were seen in the marketplace. These were the scientific calculators that had more functions but a lot more expensive. It was a long time before I actually saw one of these that someone had purchased.

As I recall, it was a couple of years latter that my Dad had purchased a basic one.

During those early years of the calculators, school kids were still being taught to use slide rules. In fact during that time it was forbidden to even have a calculator at school. The teachers said that students needed to do the higher math functions on paper plus use slide rules.

Now, look at us today. With the advent of high speed throughput heat staking machines, the manufacturing processes and costs have been reduced dramatically. How times change. Teachers are asking students to go out and purchase scientific calculators for their math assignments and for use in class. The cost of these calculators have dropped in price to just about to the point where anyone can afford it. Not only are they less expensive but their computing power is on the magnitude greater then what a computer could do twenty years ago. Likewise, computers today have more computing power than forty years ago.

Kids today do not have a clue what it is like not to have calculators. Most in the United States have access to computers either at home or at school.

Yep, technology is a changing... And it is pushing and pulling us along.

In light of the Internet, where will we be in another five or ten years?
