SEO Sticky Black And White Uppercase Words
Is it best to use the color black in creating the home page. . or is it alright to use gold or purple for the search engines?
Is it better to make a lot of uppercase words?
When making a site 'sticky' does that apply for the most part to the Home Page?
Let me answer your second question first about using all UPPERCASE words.
If you are going to use all uppercase words, do it in extreme moderation. All uppercase words looks like shouting to most people, and in my opinion the search algorithms tend to categorize all uppercase words as shouting too. What I am saying, is the engineers at Google, Yahoo!, and Microsoft Search are always tweaking the algorithms to get the best search results possible. They don't want search results pages that look like they are shouting at people either. Now, that doesn't mean that the search results pages are not going to pick up any (all uppercase) pages in the search results, it is just a guideline to think about when you are designing your website and performing SEO Best Practices.
Try to use good writing techniques in all your published writing on the Web. I am of a strong opinion, that the search algorithms are actually being engineered to analyze writing styles, proper writing syntax, and text semantics. If you write and publish on your website using good sentence structures, then the search algorithms will tend to give your website higher marks. It's just like a writing rubric grading system at school, but this grading system is truly color blind to unjust prejudice.
Don't fret if you are not a literary genius, or have a tendency to misspell words, or have other dyslexic writing tendencies. Use web browsers that have automatic spell checkers, like Firefox, or write using Microsoft Word or equivalent word processors, and have these programs do automatic spell checks and syntax checks for you. If you want additional writing help, there are automatic programs such as WhiteSmoke that will help analyze, proofread, spell check, and edit your text to make it much more palatable to your visitors and the search engines too. The WhiteSmoke writing program has various writing modules available for help with general, business, creative, Hi-Tech, Bio-Tech, and executive writing styles. In addition, it is wise to have others check your published works. Don't take constructive criticism personally, and continue learning from mistakes. The best way to improve your writing skills is with practice; there is no other way.
What color should I make the home page for the search engines?
I'm convinced that color schemes in the website pages are not so much as an important factor for the search engines, as it is for your readers, and people that are likely to link to your website in the future. It you have body text, that is not hidden in the page, the search engines can read it regardless of what color your page is. An important point here is, don't make your body text hidden by doing some form of Blackhat SEO tactics. The search engine algorithms are getting much more sophisticated, and will likely give your website a search ranking penalty if you use Blackhat SEO tactics. You however do need to make the page easy to read for your online readers. Typically white on black is harder to read than dark on light colors. Once again this is just a guideline. I have used both at various times. If I have a lot to say, and I expect my readers to be able to spend a lot of time on the website, then I would make the pages as easy to read as possible. If I have a little bit to say, and I want to use a little bit more creative license in my web designs, then experiment with other color schemes.
For example: My Backflag site that I use for Internet shorts, is light on dark backgrounds which in my opinion is harder to read. On the other hand, my According to Jim site is mostly dark on light backgrounds, for easier in-depth reading. See Marketing-101 for an overview.
Now, if you look closely, you will see that I actually use both, dark on light, and light on dark backgrounds, at www.jimwarholic.com. The header area is a dark background and the body is a light background.
Does making a site "sticky" apply, for the most part, to the Home Page?
The term "sticky" generally refers to the ability of a website to capture the attention of a reader in order to draw that reader back to your website, and the ability to empower your reader to interact with the site by having them explore the website pages and read more content. How well you do this through out the website will determine how sticky your website is. Different types of websites have different degrees of stickiness. As far as how sticky your Home Page should be is concerned, it all depends on what you intend to do with the site in the first place. In my opinion, the Home Page should be an overview guide about your website. If someone comes to your website the first time through the Home Page, and you have very little information, they will have no idea what it really is about.
The example you gave, about the "Company of Winners" books is an example of an overview Home Page. This one is a graphic, which generally speaking, an all graphic home page is not the best from a search engine optimization perspective to be search engine friendly, but it does however show the point I am trying to make about the home page being an overview guide.
Hope that helps you.
Best regards,
Jim

Google Increases Internet and Intranet Search Productivity and IT Cost Savings
Cloud Computing The Google Way

Wow, What A Google Day!
I got a chance to attend a really informative half day Google Innovation seminar held at the Santa Clara Marriott today. The conference theme was how Google is innovating for businesses in the form of cloud computing applications and passing cost savings through some really wild changes for IT departments to save tons of time and money over traditional ways of finding, sharing, and the securing of all internal data, along with major improvements in the productivity of workers and huge cost savings to both big and small enterprise companies.
Read more about the cloud computing concepts at the Google Innovation for Business seminar, along with a first hand look at what the opposition (Microsoft) had to say.

Google, Yahoo, or Microsoft Advertising?
The following chart is showing where most of the searches are occurring. When deciding where to invest your online advertising dollars, it might look like Google is the only place to invest, however, depending on your particular business, whether technical oriented, business oriented, or consumer oriented; it is probably a wise decision to try some test advertising campaigns in Yahoo and Microsoft also.
In October, Google Sites increased its lead atop the core search ranking with 58.5 percent of U.S. searches, gaining 1.5 share points versus the previous month. Yahoo! Sites ranked second with 22.9 percent, followed by Microsoft Sites (9.7 percent), Ask Network (4.7 percent) and Time Warner Network (4.2 percent).

Ask Network | 4.7% | 4.7% | 0.0
Time Warner Network | 4.3% | 4.2% | -0.1
* Based on the five major search engines including partner searches and cross-channel searches. Searches for mapping, local directory, and user-generated video sites that are not on the core domain of the five search engines are not included in the core search numbers.
In October, Americans conducted 10.5 billion searches at the core search engines, marking a 12-percent increase versus September. More than 6.1 billion core searches were conducted at Google Sites during the month (up 15 percent), while Yahoo! Sites recorded 2.4 billion (up 8 percent). All core search engines posted solid gains in search query volume in October.

The Most Important Question On The Internet
Are Customers Finding Your Global Or Local Business Online?By: Jim Warholic
Internet Marketing and Advertising on Google, Yahoo!, and MSN Search engines.
In the competitive business world we live in, a business must be proactive with 20/20 business vision when it comes to marketing their company online. Any business that is selling products or services to other businesses in the case of B2B, or selling to consumers in the case of B2C would not dream of going without hiring some good sales people. Many times these businesses will be paying top dollar to get the best sales person they can. But, some businesses will neglect what I would consider the most important salesman for their company, their corporate website.
Presidents And CEOs
The buck stops here, with the president and CEO of a company. I am going straight to the top on this one. These are the people that are the ultimate decision makers. They provide the guiding force and direction for a company. While a president and CEO does not have to be a marketing genius, they do have to understand the marketing basics, at a fundamental level, for the health and well being of an organization. In essence a good president and CEO knows the importance of hiring the right people for the job. They know that good marketing is key for business success.
Many of the presidents and CEOs know hiring good people is key to corporate growth, but have not really grasped the importance of the Internet search engines, Internet marketing, and online advertising. They themselves use the Internet on a regular basis for searching all sorts of things but there is a disconnect between the searches they personally do and other people searching for what their business does. Small business company owners seem to be especially guilty of this Internet shortsightedness. Simply put, they are not seeing 20/20 business vision, and sadly they don't even recognize their poor business vision and the need for good business glasses. They have the misplaced idea that a website is just something you are forced to have in business, instead of wrapping their arms around it, promoting it, and realizing that the website is, or should be, one of their most important assets a company can have. This business mentality is not strictly limited to small businesses. Corporate America has a certain segment group that is just as guilty as their small business counterparts. They have gotten fat and happy doing business the old way and have not adapted to the changes taking place online.
Embracing Internet Marketing
Grasping the potential the Internet has for your business is absolutely paramount to focusing a fair amount of your marketing and advertising dollars online. A salesman can not be available 24x7 but the website can operate round-the-clock, and be accessible to customers that are looking for those frequently asked questions (FAQs) about the products or services your company provides. In addition, detailed information can be available to your customers at their browsing finger tips. Information such as application notes, drawings, manuals, material properties, and type specifications can be made available to customers.
The website is so powerful that it can do most of the work of all your sales force combined. This allows your sales force more time to concentrate on closing sales and building better customer relations. The fact of the matter is the website can help support the structure of the company and provide excellent tools for the sales department to use. Simply having the information at both the customer's and your sales department's fingertips will make everyone's job much easier and will result in more sales. Email's written can then be linked back to the specific information being requested. Customers will come to rely on your company's website as being a good source of information. This helps promote your brand and keeps the customer's focus on you, instead of the competition.
B2B, Business-to-business customers are becoming much more demanding in what they want from a source provider. They demand the information now. If you don't provide that information, it is just a matter of time before they go somewhere else. Maybe you have worked hard to build up customer relationships in your business. But in today's business climate, where the weather changes quickly, and customers are likely to get blown off course quickly by the competition, it is imperative to set aside a marketing and advertising budget and focus this toward providing a solid online presence.
Forget the smoke and mirrors approach with the website design. You must have substance, and that substance involves work, time, effort, and a fair amount of financial investment. To be sure, the website is really only the starting point from an Internet marketing perspective. The website must be promoted in the form of quality link building, continued website development in the form of new content and regular site maintenance updates, along with regular detailed evaluations and analysis. With billions of pages online, not to mention the online directories with sometimes hundreds of competitors lined up and down the pages there has to be marketing focus with ongoing keyword development and targeting of new market segments to really standout online.
The businesses that standout on the Internet, and standout first online with the search engines for their specific industries' keywords, will be in a position to capture those early sales leads and new customers.
As the owner, president, or CEO of your organization, you can do only so much yourself. Start today, set aside an Internet marketing and online advertising budget to promote your business on the Internet.

The ABC of SEO
The Prerequisite For Any B2C Or B2B Business Website Is To Use The Keywords Of The Business In The SiteSuch a simple statement but I would have to say is very often overlooked by the business owner or president of the organization. They assume that someone arriving to the website will already know what their business is about before they get there. That is simply not the case on the Internet.
When writing online, the subject matter should be laid out using keywords that customers would use to find a company using the search engines. Both B2C and B2B websites have some very unique challenges facing them. Understanding the target audience will be a prime importance in establishing what keywords are to be placed into the website. Search engines place a priority on the words within the website itself when the search robots crawl or spider the page. Unless the copy in the website has the words that customers would use; any searches online would not likely result in that company website showing up in the search results pages.

Building A Better Search Engine
Now you can customize your own search engine dedicated to your own needs, or better still, build a search engine for your own B2c or B2b business privately or broadcast it publicly for customers to be able to find the information they need.
With the ability to allow for both results from the World Wide Web, and/or a select group of websites, you can customize it to your tastes.
If you are a non-profit, university, or a government agency you can select the option for ads free display for the search results pages. If you want a totally ads free enterprise system from Google, for users to search your website, they offer their enterprise solutions, Google Mini and Google Search Appliance.
While Google Mini and Google Search Appliance are not free as an enterprise solution, I am sure the two solutions are very robust and built with the Google Search technology to provide very good results for both your website Internet search results and your business's intranet search solution.
The Google Mini delivers cost-effective, high-quality search for your public website, intranet, and file servers – and you can be up and running in less than an hour. Supports from 50,000 to 300,000 documents. Learn more.
The Google Search Appliance provides robust, scalable and secure search across virtually all the information in your company. Starts at $30,000 for search across 500,000 documents. Learn more. There are other free Open Source search applications and nearly free apps listed at: Search Tools - Enterprise Search Engines - Information, Guides and News
Depending on your company's search needs will depend on the type of search product required. If you are a small company with very little information on the web, then you probably do not need to have a search engine and can very easily provide a menu system for navigation for website visitors. However, with very large websites, some form a search engine software or hardware is helpful to the end users. You want your customers to be able to find the information, products, or services offered by your B2C or B2B business. Likewise, internal searches on the intranet are very beneficial to the company at large. Sales, marketing, advertising, engineering, customer service, management, and HR can all benefit by making the documents available through the intranet.

Staying On Top Of The Internet

The Internet is becoming much more interesting in our Life and Times as time goes on. Staying up to date with the latest technologies available is most important for the B2B - Business to business, B2C - Business to consumer, and the C2C - Consumer to consumer world. Most Small Businesses today are not taking advantage of even a fraction of the power available through the Internet. The Web has created a solid foundation for marketing, advertising, and sales for all types of Small Businesses.
Large corporations for years have been using the Internet as a means of having their websites be a supplement and in some cases the main tools for bringing products and services to the market place. Large corporations have worked hard to establish their brand with the consumer or in the case of B2B; other businesses. For the Small Biz community however, many have not even thought about how they can establish their brand online through Web traffic on the local Internet markets.
Consumers are still buying things locally and are still using stores and services from their local communities. However, marketing and advertising in the past was through a Yellow Page Ad or the local newspaper. Things have changed. Now there is also a need to market and advertise a local business using the Internet. Consumers and Businesses are pushing the big Yellow Page Books off to the side. In fact, if you haven't looked at a recent Yellow Pages; the publishers are trying to reduce the costs to print these books by making the text type so small that you need a magnifying glass in order to read it. I have become most disgusted with our local Yellow Pages for this very reason. I am now much more inclined to go to Google Search and do a local search in my community rather than pull out the fine print.Millions of consumers are using the Internet daily to search out small biz. These figures are growing, especially as High Speed Internet has become more popular. Local directories are sprouting up all the time. These directories are becoming a way of providing a link to your B2B or B2C website that can support your business. Having information related to the specifics of your business can be an excellent way of being able to market and advertise 24 x 7 x 365 days a year. See information about various small biz strategies and expanding market reach online.
We have heard the story from some businesses having had a website for years that, "no one ever comes to our website." In their mind they have written off the Web and their website as being, "a waste of time and money." These business owners have placed very little effort into marketing their business online through good search engine marketing strategies or what is known as SEO, Search Engine Optimization.
Search Engine Optimization is actually a misnomer. The term SEO or Search Engine Optimization and another term often used is SEM or Search Engine Marketing are actually terms used to describe optimizing a website for the particular keywords and keyword phrases to be found in the search engine searches for industry specific keywords related to particular fields of business. The search results pages for keyword queries can be a boom for sales on all types of products, services, organizations, and brands if a company starts being displayed in the search results pages. The SEO and SEM needs to be much more than just an optimizer of the company website. There are hundreds of onsite variables that affect the ranking of a website. Additionally there are countless other offsite variables that directly affect a website showing up in the results pages. For example from a Search Engine Algorithm, the quality of, and the topics of other websites that link directly to another Web site is a key variable. Certainly as Search Algorithms have been improved over the years has had a direct impact on the value of links from other sites. See: Search Engine Optimization Question
The process of marketing and advertising online is in a state of flux for B2B, B2C, and C2C. But, that is no different than having to battle the competition in other media outlets for any business. The Search Engine Companies are looking for the best results possible. Search Engine competition is good for the consumer. If there was only one search engine on the horizon, with one group of search engine results, and only one online advertising model, then they would have a monopoly online. The search engine company could make it so no other website could ever get into the natural or organic search results. A monopoly search engine company could force everyone to start paying for online advertising. This however, would be very foolish indeed. Consumers and businesses are free to use Google, Yahoo, MSN or any number of other smaller search engines that are starting up.
Trust is the key. Without trust and another all to often forgotten concept, Internet ethics, consumers could very easily migrate to other search services. Search as we know it is quite new. In just the past ten years we have seen Search develop into what has become an Internet marketing facilitator. The whole process of search can be summed up for the business world as a Marketing Middleman. The industry for business is about connecting buyers to sellers; matching up the needs of some with the products and services of others, and focusing on the transfer of information from one entity to another. If everything was Black and White it would surely make for a very dull colored world. That is why we will continue to see innovations, new technologies, and powerful online programs that will provide a great benefit to all business in the world. The future of Search is limitless. I suspect in another ten years that we will be blown away at the power at our fingertips. Consumers and businesses will continue to embrace the Internet for eCommerce, research, and a host of other solutions that have not even been invented yet. The only question is; will you be on the forefront of the solution and embracing the Internet for your business?

Internet Search Engine Statistics
From a standpoint of Internet Marketing and Search Engines Use Statistics there are some interesting nuggets of information to be gleaned from a couple of online studies comparing the Top search engines.
Nielsen Net Ratings had a published report released in August 2005.
Nielsen//NetRatings Releases Top 10 Search Engine Share Rankings for July 2005comScore Networks also published search engine use statistics in August 2005
Table 1: Top 10 Search Engines Ranked by Search Share: June-July 2005
Provider / Vertical June 05 July 05
1. Google Search 47.0% 46.2%
2. Yahoo! Search 22.3% 22.5%
3. MSN Search 12.5% 12.6%
4. AOL Search 5.5% 5.4%
5. My Way Search 1.8% 2.2%
6. Ask Jeeves Search 1.8% 1.6%
7. Netscape Search 0.9% 1.6%
8. Dogpile.com Search 0.8% 0.9%
9. iWon Search 1.0% 0.9%
10. EarthLink Search 0.8% 0.8%
Source: Nielsen//NetRatings MegaView Search, August 2005
Share of Online Search Submissions
Source: comScore qSearch
Total U.S. - July 2005
Property - Share of Search
Google Sites 36.5%
Yahoo! Sites 30.5%
MSN-Microsoft Sites 15.5%
Time Warner Network 9.9%
Ask Jeeves 6.1%
InfoSpace Network 0.9%
All Other 0.6%
Google Search Is The Search Engine Leader
Google Search is either a leader at 46.2% or 36.5%, depending which particular study is the most accurate. However, that does not exactly tell the full story. In the published studies, Time Warner Network which is made up of AOL and Netscape have either a 9.9% SEARCH SHARE stake or the other study has 7.0% combined SEARCH SHARE stake. The significance of this is that Both AOL and Netscape use Google Search for their results.
If you add up these results Google would either be at 46.4% or 53.2% of all the searches done online with the nearest competitor at 22.5% or 30.5%.
The significance of these two studies is very important from an Internet Marketing and Online Advertising perspective.
The eMail Marketing Promotions landscape is littered with INTERNET SEARCH MARKETING promises of being number one with a quick website inclusion into the smaller search engines and other types, of what some refer to as SECOND TIER search engine companies, in which they do not even show up in the study results. It makes very little sense to pay for something that at best is around 0.6% of the total searches conducted online. There is no such thing as a free lunch with promises of high traffic to your site by simply paying for quick inclusion into the search data base.
Free Website Submission
The top three Search companies have free website submit to be included in the crawls from automatic web robots which cruise the Internet and catalog the websites into their database for the natural or organic search results. Websites can even be found by the online search robots even if a website is not submitted. That is because the robots follow links from other websites and are likely to find other sites through this link process.
